Ohio 13, Out Of Mansfield, Claims Another Life
Going over all The Highway Films that were produced in the years of my dad's service to The Ohio Highway Patrol. Ohio 13 was mentioned in "Highways Of Agony". My heart feels a little heavy tonight as I learned that my friend Connie , who just passed away from cancer two months or so back, her son (29) was killed in an auto accident two days ago on Ohio 13. "Unbelievable " So much sadness for his family. It really brings home the message of wearing seat belts and how important they are. He wasn't wearing his belt and was thrown as his minivan rolled landing on its top. It was a violent crash as he went left of center and struck another vehicle head on.
Just last week an elderly couple was killed when a tractor-trailer ran over their Ford Escape stopped at a red light. This happened at the same light I always go through when traveling up-north to Willard, Ohio. US 23 and 229. The driver of the semi stated that his brakes failed. Something my dad said to me is a common excuse for some truckers. To confuse it even more, this man had a person riding shot-gun with him. I side with my dad in this, I mean if the semi had bad brakes why in the world would he be driving it in the first place. Regardless of what he claims, it is his fault for not stopping at the intersection when the light was red. It really unnerves me to think about it. I had stopped at that light countless of times. Now this with Connie's son. It really pushes safety in my mind as I knew him when he was just a little boy and having my son soon to be among the millions of drivers. I guess the point is clear, always wear your seat belt and be a defensive driver. Although I doubt any of that would have helped the couple in the Ford Escape but when you can, its just common sense to do so. My prayers are with Connie's Mom as she will have to go through yet another funeral of a family member. I know IM Schizz and his family had gone through that heart break too just a year ago when they lost their lovely parents. I love you all and I am always praying for all of you as well! May God always strengthen your faith with His great love and mercy!

What A Day This Has Been!
Well today started early with a trip to Exact Auto, guys did a great job on my car! I had to have ball joints and the dreaded Tie-Rod Ends replaced. That started at 8:30 this morning to 4 pm this afternoon, but its done, now all I have to get repaired is the strut mounts, plug wires plus a tune-up and of course alignment...AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! Good Grief , the joys of owning an automobile , all the things a new driver has to get acquainted with eventually. First thrill is the basic three, Car payment, Car Insurance and Gasoline Money all requiring a job of course. I think they should teach this in driver's ed. All of what you need in car ownership. Mine began in 1987, felt good the first few months, then 'its not just a car, its an adventure !" Oh well, got to love it.
My aunt is doing better, still is in the hospital getting test done, my nephew is the same as well as my Dad#2. That still worries me, but what's new, I always worry. My dad and mom seemed in good spirits especially ,my dad, who made a day of picking on his grand kids, my son and my daughter, my mom and me. He told a story about himself and how when he was a boy he collected comic books to trade with his friends. On one of the comic books, my dad spotted a prize that he wanted "A Gene Aultry Guitar " and to get this, he had to sell so many cans of Cloverine Ointment" . He sold this without his mom knowing it and waited patiently for it to arrive after he sent the money in. I can picture this in my mind as dad described the image of "The singing cowboy sporting a big smile, riding his horse Champion , throwing a lasso" on a blue guitar...well like something out of "A Christmas Story" when he got his long-awaited prize, it turned out to be an ukulele , not a guitar, he was so bummed , he traded it off.
Then out of the "Blue" pardon me, he started to laugh until his face turned beet red. I want to apologize in advance for the crudity of this next story. My Nephew Scott had been attending church with my folks for sometime and in a habit of sitting with them in the same row. This Sunday my dad and Scott were sitting side by side. After the service was over, dad stood up, bent slightly over while doing this action and accidentally broke wind in Scott's face while he tried to get up. The look on Scott's face was priceless. In shock, he stated quietly and calmly with a big burst of laughter almost escaping his lips "Grandpa, I can't believe you just did that!' Of course my dad's face was already red, just replied "Its the strain of my body Scott, that happens when you get old."
Seems like everything happens when you get older, things that occur in the most awkward and unappropriated places. Which seems so unfair but can't be helped. My favorite are the passing of unwanted and unheard(only to hard of hearing farmers) gas. Just carrying on a conversation with you like nothing happened, while you the innocent bystander have to keep a straight face. Just another of life's mysteries. My favorite explanations are as follows "Who Smurfed?' I like this one because I never liked the smurfs. " Was That A Duck?" , "Squeaky Floorboard." this one is used quite frequently by my brother as he is testing the floor....so to speak and an oldie but a goodie from my generation and the one before "Who Cut The Cheese?" That one was a great insult to cheese lovers everywhere.
Got to laugh at yourself, but always remember to be serious behind the wheel, keep your vehicle in good working order with routine maintenance and Respect others around you, especially your friends and family, lovingly joyful memories are the best of them all. I guess that is my lesson to you for today!

If You Ever Been On 71, 270, 23 Or 315 This Is Your Song!
I posted this because it is my son's favorite Alabama Song. Now since he is learning to drive and soon will be among these "Traffic Nightmares", Mom decided to dedicate this post ...Not Ready For This At All!
Now they just need to write a song for Columbus, Ohio!

My Son Is Doing Great
I'd be the first to admit that I am not cut out to be a drivers instructor . When it comes to my son, however I do pretty good, although he likes to point out my mistakes now. That is ok, for now (Ha-Ha) but seriously its good, he is getting to know what not to do and picking up on the small things as well. He is doing great. I am so proud of him and his sister.
Her second track meet, which was at home, was canceled because it was too cold. That's right..another blast of winter came leaving snow after two days of temps almost 80 degrees.
Now my dad is sick, which has been pretty raw, my mom called and told me that dad was in bed with vomiting and the runs. Mom is still struggling with her blood sugar. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers. I have down with something that has made me tired and chilling my body where I can't keep warm...oh yes the change of temps strike again. Feeling ill, just in time for Easter. I am sure it will be ok, my son has managed to be not phased by it, although my daughter I think gave it to all of us being of ill last week.
All and all, I know a strange blog.
Even though dad is feeling poorly, he is giving my son advise and that is great. Me, I worry over everything and everybody, especially.
Hope and pray everyone here and Schizz's family in Amesbury, Ma are keeping well, love you all, especially that special man, Schizz!
Somebody posted this on YouTube but this is another Highway Safety Foundation Film made with The Ohio State Highway Patrol in the years my dad was with them. I believe they were constructing a new Highway through Ohio at the time of this film. I can't remember if it was 270 or 71. This isn't the complete film but its enough of it to get the point across. Again, these are actual films of people who were injured or killed in these crashes. Out of all of the highway films made with The Ohio State Highway Patrol in those years, Mechanized Death (This one) is the most difficult one to watch because in one segment they respond to an over turned car in which a baby died and the patrolman tried C.P.R to save her, but he was unable and wept. He was a father of a couple little ones himself. a 14 yer old boy and a young mother also passes away in a different accident scene. I can understand them not posting this entire film.

Driver's Ed
Wanted to share more of The Ohio State Highway Patrol films that helped The Highway Safety Foundation get across the importance of good driving habits, that save lives. They are graphic.
Remember these are real Ohio State Patrolmen, people who helped at these accident scenes. They are old films, but deserve respect clearly because of the workers and accident victims that were injured or killed.

Car Names
So much has happened this past weekend, please hang in there as I sort these thoughts into one blog, I promise it won't hurt. My mom shared with me an album that my second cousin Mary Rose left that had photos of family history concerning my Grandma Sarah Havens family, The McDonnells. She had left it here after Uncle Franks Funeral Service. I got to see pictures of all of them that I never got to see including my Great-Grandma Hazel (Rector) McDonnell when she was married at 15 to my great grandpa, of course she had lied about her age, so she could marry him. Both of them looked so young. So, I got to see this album when the kids and I went to my folks for dinner. Now, you are probably wondering what this has to do with car names...I am getting to that.
While there, we got on the subject of cars because pictured in the album were old model cars from the thirties and forties in it, so naturally the conversation progressed into my son wanting a Ford F150 as his first vehicle. I have been working with him on his driving and let him drive Curve Road to my folks house. I will eventually take him to a driver's school in Delaware, Ohio. His cousin was there with his 2000 Ford Taurus and "The Name Of Cars " we have given over the years came up because he had shared with us that he had called his car "Bertha" not sure why. It had started how and why we named our cars and trucks.
I remember reading Sir Anthony's Blog on how some of there vehicles impacted their lives in humorous ways. From The Falcon which he and his brothers dangled a rope out of a hole in the car's floor board while their mother was driving, ok..I get it ,it represented what male horses and dogs look like underneath...leave it to boys (Ha-Ha). His poor mom. Next it was his Gremlin called " Libido "...I still haven't made that connection ..yet!
A car can bring out the best and worse in all of us when we experience mechanical problems or just how they are built and driven "Elmer" a white heavy duty GMC pick-up my dad had , got its name from my mom because she never liked driving it . It was no power steering, standard shift transmission...dad called it "A Man's Truck" just to get under mom's skin. If anybody had driven a shift up Central Ave in Delaware, knows how she felt.
"Old Betsy" was the name my brother gave my parent's 1995 Crown Vic before they traded it for "Arnold" a 2003 Ford Exployer. ''Big Blue" a 1977 Ford LTD was their other car when we grew into our teenage years and driven by all of us but it was my sister who named it and her little Ford truck "Lil Red"
Right before his death, my husband picked out a 1996 Teal Ford Windstar, before that we had my favorite, a Ford Escort Wagon. Standard shift, it was the easiest car to drive and wonderful on gas but we out grew it and when our children turned eight and six , we got the Windstar.
After my husband died and we moved to Delaware, I hated driving it because it brought back my late husband's last few moments before he went into the hospital and then passed away. I has a very hard time wanting to get into it. It really got bad when my anxiety and depression worsened. I had no choice to drive it and slowly I gained my confidence back. It seemed like every time I was in it with the kids "Slow Ride" by Foghat came on...so I called it "Slow Ride" a typical mini-van, it fit.
Today, while driving home from my daughter's doctor's appointment "Brick House " by The Commadores
came on. I am not a big fan of the 1977 song but it always comes on every time I get into my newest car. 2002 Red Ford Taurus. So since "Red" was used, My car is "Brick House."
So in honor of all the cars in our lives and to my car now...its dedicated to them
My brother had restored a 1955 Ford Pickup and called it "Puppy" he had a second name for it "Pride And Joy" a song from Stevie Ray Vaughan

I tried to think of a song that goes with "Libido" The gremlin, although personally,I think his Fire bird fits better. This is the only thing I could come up with..hope you like it.
